[Urban] Aging in Place

Here’s some current projects we’re working on:

1

Solo Aging in Cities + Aging While Black

Aging in cities is accompanied by convenience as well as challenges. We examine the complexities of aging-in-place in urban spaces, as well as the richness captured by new work characterizing the Black aging experience. ‘Aging While Black’ presents new opportunities to fully explore the diverse realities of growing older in Black bodies.

2

Aging Bodies: Walking, Sensing, and Engaging Social Memory

Walking is a fundamental and sustainable method of movement that connects people to places and is essential for understanding mobile, modern life. By sensing the world around us while “in motion” we can gather data about how moving from A to B is not just about getting there, but it’s also about the experience of the journey. Using walking as a “mobile method” in research, we integrate “go-alongs” and walking interviews to understand how people experience and perceive their environment.

3

Gentrification & Displacement Threat

Place shapes how we engage with those around us. In a series of mini-projects, we examine housing, changing neighborhoods, placemaking, the arts, and social capital as a tool for generativity and social health.
